When do rock, pop, country, folk, jazz and blues songwriters meet up to play a show together? Beginning May 6, they'll do it once a month at Linnaea's Cafe in San Luis Obispo. The showcase is presented by West Coast Songwriters, a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members. Local WCS member Steve Key of Pismo Beach is the manager of the showcase, which will be held on first Sundays at Linnaea's. Shows begin at 7pm. There is no cover charge. All ages are welcome. Performers may sign up at 6:30pm for a two-song slot. Poets and composers are also welcome. Part of the show will be a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance of the night. Anyone can perform on the showcase, but only WCS members are eligible to compete. Painted Sky Studios of Cambria has donated two hours of recording time to the Best Song winner. Guest judges include professional songwriters Jill Knight of Cambria and Doug Clegg of Santa Barbara. Public Radio host Sonnie Brown of KCBX will MC. West Coast Songwriters runs nine showcases a month in Hollywood, Sacramento, around the Bay Area and now in SLO. In August, each showcase will invite its Best Song winners to return for a playoff -- one winner from each showcase goes to the finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley. Three winners are picked to perform in front of publishers, producers, booking agents, hit songwriters and record company executives at the 27th Annual Songwriters Conference at Foothill College in Los Altos September 7-9. Linnaea's Cafe is located at 1110 Garden St., SLO. www.linnaeas.com.

The next Ragg show is on May 12th in Hollywood at a place called the Studio Suite. I met Anthony in the early 90's while filming a friends band, he was playing in a band to and then we started dating. I started Ragg about 10 years ago originally to be an all female band but I couldn't find enough female musicians at the time so Anthony started playing bass for us. I had a friend Christine who sang and wrote songs. We have had many ups and downs in the band and many different members as many bands do. We recently had a song form one of our older cd's titled Room Full Of Clowns chosen for a national Target commercial. The song was a pop rock tune called "I want more". We also had a song titled "Brutal" off of the album 'Kill by inches : The evolution theory" chosen by Vince Neil of Motley Crue fame to be used on hid pay per view series called "Vince Neil's Rock Tails". Some songs also from that album "Kill by inches also were on the top ten on Cobblestone music satellite station a couple of years ago.

Right now our singer we have had for the past 4-5 years has been Debi Red, I Monique Grajeda am on guitar and back up vocals, Anthony Bolin is also guitar and back up vocals, Chris Dollahite is bass and back up vocals and David Barron is on drums.

This is just a quick skelton on the Band and some history. If you want the crazy crazy stories I have those to. Those get lengthy so maybe you want those or maybe not.

The Ragg sound has gone through many transitions and has had many influences. Originally when Monique Grajeda started the band the intention was to inter-mix the fast and fun riffs and energy of punk with the hard and serious heavy tones of rock. Somehow they were interpreted as a cross between the Slits and the Raincoats both female fronted bands of the 80's pop punk scene. Later as new members came into Ragg the influence shifted toward more of a pop punk sound with also quite a bit of an eclectic potpourri of various songs each of styles representing punk, rock, alternative, melodic rock, ska, and instrumental. The core sound of Ragg was starting to stretch its niche into an undistinguishable message. Ragg reformed again with a new singer and a much more defined print in the heavy rock sound with light tones of punk flavor. Often influenced by the rock music of LA 80's bands the current sound is also engrained with the taste of new metal . The most surprising facet of Ragg is their live performance. Not to be underestimated the female portions of this band slap the audience in the face with powerful vocals, impressive guitar patterns, energetic stage athletics, and glowing personalities. Ragg is in its natural state in the world of rock/metal/punk and hopes to be creating their unique blend of character for a long time to come.
